Turon, otherwise known asbanana lumpia, is a Filipino treat usually served atmeriendaΒ (in the Philippines, meriendaΒ means afternoon snack time). Turon is as wonderful as it is simple β a dish of bold flavour and marvellous texture in which the sweetness of banana, a note of molasses from brown sugar and the crispness of filo pastry come together. Just about everything you could want from a great dessert.π
This is one of those dishes on my bucket list that I kept putting off, becauseβ¦. hmmmmβ¦ I was scared (?). Spring roll pastry always frightened me: I didn't know where to get it, or how on earth to separate those sheets from one another without tearing them. Would filo pastry thinner than paper dry out while I worked? Well, here are your answers β the pastry is in almost every larger supermarket, the sheets really do separate easily and only need patience, and the pastry certainly won't dry out if you cover it with a damp tea towel.π So, now that we have got rid of all our unfounded fears β shall we go to the kitchen and give it a try? π
